Samarkand in two days: a first-timer’s route

September 10, 2026·6 min read·Team member 1

Two unhurried days are enough to see the Registan, Amir Temur’s mausoleum, Shah-i-Zinda and the bazaar — here is the order we recommend.

Two full days in Samarkand let you see its great monuments without rushing: spend the first on the Registan, Gur-e-Amir, Bibi-Khanym and the Siab Bazaar, and the second on Shah-i-Zinda, the Ulugh Beg Observatory and a return to the Registan after dark. Most guests arrive from Tashkent on the Afrosiyob high-speed train, which takes around two hours.

Day one: the heart of Amir Temur’s capital

Start early at the Registan, when the light is soft and the square is quiet. Its three madrasas — Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor and Tilla-Kori — are best explored slowly; step inside Tilla-Kori to see its gilded prayer hall. From there it is a short drive to Gur-e-Amir, the mausoleum of Amir Temur and his descendants, with its fluted turquoise dome.

After lunch, walk to the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, one of the largest mosques of its era, and cross the road to the Siab Bazaar for dried fruit, nuts, halva and Samarkand’s famous round bread. Late afternoon is a good time to rest at the hotel before dinner.

Day two: Shah-i-Zinda and the stargazer king

Begin at Shah-i-Zinda, an avenue of tiled mausoleums climbing a hillside. It is a revered place of pilgrimage, so dress modestly and keep voices low. Continue to the Ulugh Beg Observatory, built by Amir Temur’s grandson, a scholar who mapped the stars with remarkable precision. In the evening, return to the Registan to see it illuminated.

Practical tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes: the Registan and Shah-i-Zinda involve steps and uneven stone.
  • Carry some cash in Uzbek so‘m for entrance tickets and the bazaar.
  • Bring a light scarf for mosques and shrines.
  • In summer, plan sightseeing for the morning and late afternoon.
